The bespoke panoramic wallpaper Cent Lièvres is a window opening onto a peaceful and hilly countryside, very bright with its yellow-tinted fields. It offers a real breath of fresh air. Bucolic, this enchanting setting reveals a small path that leads to a pond. Mischievous little hares gambol here and there among the hills, as an echo of the tale The Enchanted Whistle. The Alexandre Dumas’ tale tells the story of a shepherd challenged by the king to bring back a hundred hares to their stable.
In the greenish-blue sky, small light clouds shelter the flight of swallows. In the foreground, an apple tree and flowers of the fields traced in ink, frame the landscape painted in gouache, like an engraving reminiscent of ancient tales.
This wallpaper can be associated with the panoramic wallpaper La Légende des Hirondelles.
The tale One Hundred Hares was written by Alexandre Dumas in 1859. A shepherd has to take three tests in order to have the king's agreement to marry his daughter. The first of these is to bring back a hundred hares in their stable before the end of the day. With the help of a magical whistle given by an old lady, he passes the challenges despite the attempts of the princess and her father to trap him. The shepherd challenges them : to have a hare, the king must kiss the rump of his donkey. During the third test, the shepherd is willing to reveal the king’s humiliation. To avoid being embarrassed, the king stops the challenge and accepts the marriage.
